10,600 in 2025: Ireland was told abortion would be rare. The figures are still with us.

The Irish Times reported that around 10,600 abortions took place in Ireland in 2025, after 10,852 in 2024. Of the 2024 figure, 10,445 were under 12 weeks, 25 were on grounds of risk to the life or health of the woman, 13 were emergencies, and 117 were for fatal foetal anomaly. The Independent has put the 2019–2024 total at 46,861. These are not slogans. They are the State's own record.

On 3 July 2026 the HSE published its first termination of pregnancy report. The numbers are still with us. Ireland was told abortion would be rare. It has not been rare. Ten thousand lives in a year is not rare.

Each figure is a person who will not be born, and a mother who will live with that choice. Some were frightened. Some were pressured. Some were given no other story. The reports do not capture those conversations. They only count the outcome.

We were promised a limited law. What we have is a routine. The wait, the remaining restrictions, the language of “rare” — none of it has held the line that was sold to the country.

Do not go quiet because the numbers have become familiar. Write. Speak. Keep the figures in the open, because they are lives.
