Three days is not a barrier. It is time to choose — and this Bill is not law yet.

On 17 June 2026 the Dáil passed Second Stage of Sinn Féin's Health (Abolition of Three Day Wait Rule) Bill 2026 (Bill 47/2026) by 86 votes to 70. That is not the end of the story. The Bill is not law. It still has to go through Committee Stage, Report Stage, and Final Stage in the Dáil, then the Seanad, and then commencement. Until that happens, the three-day wait remains. People who care about life should not treat a Second Stage vote as a finished fight.

The wait is not cruelty. It is time. Time to hear another voice. Time to sit with a hard choice. Time for someone who is frightened, pressured, or unsure to choose life. Removing it is not a small administrative tidy-up. It is the State deciding that haste is better than pause.

Ireland was told abortion would be rare. It has not been rare. The numbers sit there in the reports, year after year, and they are not abstractions. They are lives. A three-day wait does not restore what was lost, but it is one of the last remaining spaces in which a woman can still change her mind.

TDs who voted for abolition, and those who have not yet had to vote on later stages, should hear from the people they represent. Write to them. Tell them the wait is not a barrier. It is time to choose. And this Bill is not law yet.

Voices of Life will keep saying that plainly. The vote on 17 June was a warning, not a conclusion.
